Display Merchandising Themes

You may have never heard of the term “point-of-purchase display,” but chances are you probably have encountered one on several occasions. Point-of-purchase displays are used to subliminally promote impulse buying. These displays are usually set up around checkout counters. The most popular type of point-of-purchase displays can be seen in general merchandise stores showcasing candy, magazines, beverage coolers, gift cards and trial-size products like lint rollers and tissue.

Other types of point-of-purchase displays include window and counter displays, floor stands, banners and various open and closed display cases.

In the fall, many back-to-school point-of-purchase displays are prevalent in grocery stores across the country. Popular snack brand Nabisco created a display that looks like a school bus and features various snacks that kids can include in their lunches.

Limited brands also utilize point-of-purchase displays. While waiting in line at Victoria’s Secret, you can’t help but notice the stands full of merchandise like lip gloss, key chains and makeup. Likewise, Bath and Body Works has point-of-purchase displays which feature hand sanitizers, travel-size lotions and candles.

The next time you go shopping, take notice of the point-of-purchase displays. Think about what is the retailer trying to sell you. Also, see if other shoppers are purchasing merchandise from these displays.
